Father’s Day
Part 1
On Thursday, June 14 – Ruth Graham Bell went to be with Jesus. She was a pillar in the house, and the body of Christ will miss her earthly presence – for to find someone who is willing to do anything at any cost for a calling and a profession is a precious commodity – something the merchants would embrace with fervor and substance.
In Psalms 144:12 King David makes his appeal to God, “that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace”.
It takes something to be a corner stone, for the corner stone is not frivolously chosen.
Corner stones come from only the most select materials.
They are often chiseled and sculptured to be worthy of appointment.
Corner stones were placed in every significant building since building began. Usually placed in the North East Corner, the corner stone was the initial foundation stone from which the entire building ensued, every stone in the building is set in reference to the corner stone.
King David prayed that his daughters would be as corner stones, – why?
If you go to buy a new house, make sure you check the corners – both outside and in – because the corners are the pattern that everything in the house is built on. If the builder was talented and conscientious, then the corners of the house will reflect his skill and dedication. I had the opportunity to work with a master builder once – and in the course of framing a 6500 square foot home, the construction of the corners did not vary more than 1/4 inch – except in one single corner of the entire building (which varied 1/2 inch) – all the corners were exact and true.
If the corners are true, then the walls will be straight and plumb, and every addition to the structure will be true and good.
If the corners of the house are skewed, distorted or askance, then the walls, the cabinets, the doors, the windows, the carpet, the very life of the building – will be off.
If you are building with stone you take some time and consideration to decide on which stone to use for the corner. It is not a snap decision. You want only the finest and truest stones, chiseled, sculptured and polished – remember, the entire structure emanates from the corner stone.
Our daughters are the very heart of our homes and families, because a daughter becomes a wife, and a wife becomes a mother. They say that “the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world”. We could understand King David’s heart cry better if we would close our eyes and reflect on the role of daughters and mothers.
When we are a family we dwell together, that is what a family is – and every aspect of our daily life will reflect the corner stones – the daughters, wives and mothers. They are the ones who set the tone and color of the daily interactions.
Corner stones have another significant role to play – they are the connection between adjoining walls. So often, women wonder why they are always “in the middle” – being the liaison between the father and the children, or the relatives, even the creditors and the authorities – they are the corner stones – and they need to be true and straight for the family to be what it is meant to be – a haven, a shelter, a secure place to be nurtured and strengthened.
A dear friend of mine penned the following:
Where are the real mothers called from God
Who have a family and raise their children
We don’t seem to have many of them today
What happened to them anyway
You know it takes the faith of Abraham the strength of Samson
The patience of Job
The insight of Daniel
The wisdom of Solomon
The courage of David
But most of all
It takes the love of God, and that’s for sure
It takes the love of God.
Would to God that our daughters would be “as corner stones” – true and straight.
